Trophallaxis


Two ants practice trophallaxis

The ants store food in a part of the stomach called crop in order to exchange with other ants or larvae.

The ants exchange food when their anntenne are stimulated in a certail way, the ants regurgatate the food stored in their stomach.

Trophallaxis is not only a food exchange but also serves to disseminate information in the colony, for example to inform other workers on the quality of a food source.
